Chronic Fatigue & Fibromyalgia

Integrative care for CFS/ME and fibromyalgia

Understanding CFS/ME and Fibromyalgia

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS/ME) and Fibromyalgia are complex, multisystem conditions that can cause profound fatigue, widespread pain, and a constellation of other symptoms.

At Arizona Integrative Medical Center, we recognize that CFS and fibromyalgia are real physiological conditions with identifiable contributing factors. Our approach is to investigate each patient's individual situation and discuss an integrative plan that complements their conventional care.

The Post-Infectious Connection

Some cases of CFS/ME and fibromyalgia begin after an infection (viral or bacterial). Where appropriate, evaluating for prior infection can be part of an individualized assessment.

Symptoms We Often See

CFS/ME and fibromyalgia present with overlapping but distinct symptom patterns:

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
  • Profound, persistent fatigue
  • Post-exertional malaise (PEM)
  • Unrefreshing sleep
  • Cognitive difficulty ("brain fog")
  • Orthostatic intolerance
  • Flu-like symptoms
Fibromyalgia
  • Widespread muscle pain
  • Tender points throughout body
  • Morning stiffness
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Fatigue and exhaustion
  • Sensitivity to touch, light, sound

Factors That May Be Investigated

Each patient's situation is unique. Depending on history and symptoms, the following factors may be investigated as part of an individualized evaluation:

Chronic Infections

Evaluation for relevant viral or bacterial activity when clinically indicated.

Mitochondrial Function

Assessment of factors that influence cellular energy production.

Immune Status

Markers of immune balance and inflammation.

Hormonal Status

Adrenal, thyroid, and sex hormone evaluation where appropriate.

Autonomic / HPA Function

Indicators of nervous system regulation.

Gut Health

Markers of digestive function and microbiome health.

Our Approach

Dr. Stallone discusses an individualized plan with each patient. Among the options that may be considered — depending on the clinical picture — are:

  • Targeted laboratory evaluation based on history and symptoms
  • Nutritional and mitochondrial support — targeted supplementation and IV nutrient therapy when clinically appropriate
  • Antimicrobial or antiviral support — if testing identifies relevant infections
  • Hormone and adrenal support — where indicated by evaluation
  • Pain-management strategies — including anti-inflammatory protocols and low-dose naltrexone (LDN) where appropriate
  • Lifestyle counseling — pacing, sleep, nutrition, and stress management

Individual Results & Expectations

CFS/ME and fibromyalgia are challenging conditions, and recovery varies significantly between patients. Some experience meaningful improvement; others continue to manage symptoms with ongoing care. Dr. Stallone discusses realistic expectations during your evaluation and adjusts the plan over time based on response.
